    gold panning
  • Gold panning, or simply panning, is a form of placer mining that extracts gold from a placer deposit using a pan. The process is one of the simplest ways to extract gold, and is popular with geology enthusiasts because of its cheap cost and the relatively simple and easy process involved.

  • A hobby and means of finding placer gold or a sampling method used by commercial miners to judge the viability of a gold deposit. See gold pan.

  • The process of locating the richest gold bearing ground with the help of detecting equipments like gold pans and dredges.

FOUND: It couldn't be much of a visit if you never migrated down to this part of town. The old town next to the bay with its many points of interest. I've been here before, having been all around the bay area many times on the BART train while studying at the University of California at Hayward. What can you say about Ghirardelli Square? They produce cholcolate, its visually interesting, many interesting street vendors and characters frequent the place . . .

Let's start here. Few of the many forty-niners ever struck it rich in gold. The real money it is well known was from supplying the miners with goods and services in exchange for whatever they got through hardwork. If you don't think it is hardwork, try panning for gold for one day. And that was just the beginning. Once the traces were found you had to work upstream to better payoffs and most "panned" out as the saying goes. If you found a good bar you could dig and deliver its contents to the sluice boxes and long toms. Harder work. From there, there were dreams of finding the "mother lode" on the side of the mountains from which the heavy, valuable detritus had come. That required hard rock mining which was hardest of all.

So, there is this Italian guy named Dom (picture Monty Woolley). He tries his hand at it, but before 1849 is out, he has decided to set up a tent in Stockton -- and following in his food-importing father's footsteps back in Italy --he begins selling candies to the miners. He had been apprenticed as a candy maker, later traded with Uruguay for coffee and chocolate, and now, was returning to it once again with the miners. In no time he opens a store in San Francisco. All is going well for the young immigrant. Then a fire in San Francisco and another in Stockton wipes him out.
He focuses on San Francisco with the coffee business. Around the time of the civil war someone discovers you can hang gunny sacks of cacao beans. But better yet, when it gets hot the cocoa butter melts and drips out. This hardened stuff can be ground up to make chocolates!

The rest is history (not that what went before wasn't history). Ghirardelli dies after great success. Then lightning seems to strike a third time. There is another even greater fire. The Great Fire of 1906 starts when the San Andreas Fault kicks over a lantern somewhere in the town and sparks the broken gas mains. (Today, it is known as the Great San Francisco Earthquake.) Only this time the business does not get burned down and it didn't collapse from the quake. Hurray! We're going to be even richer.

Standing above it all is the clock tower from 1915.

There are many Yellow Cabs taxicab operators around the world (some with common heritage, some without). The original Yellow Cab Company, based in Chicago, Illinois is one of the largest taxicab companies in the United States.

In 1908, Albert Rockwell, (founder and General Manager of the New Departure Manufacturing Co. of Bristol, Connecticut) traveled to Europe to evaluate their taxi systems, hoping to develop a similar one in Washington, D.C.[1] 'Wyckoff, Church and Partridge' had a number of orange-yellow colored Rockwell taxicabs operating on Manhattan streets in 1909.[2] By March 1910, the Connecticut Cab Co. (essentially the directors of New Departure Manufacturing Co.) assumed operating control of Wyckoff, Church and Partridge's taxis.[3]

The 'Yellow Taxicab Co.' was incorporated in New York on April 4, 1912. Its fares that year started at 50?/mile (about $11.38 today.) Among its directors and major stockholders were Albert F. Rockwell and the Connecticut Cab Co.[citation needed] Shortly after incorporation the Yellow Taxicab Co. merged with the Cab and Taxi Co., and with the strength of Connecticut Cab with whom its name was interchangeably used, the young business assumed a large share of the New York market. Its independent corporate life was fairly short, however, as fare wars and restrictions forced a merger with the Mason-Seaman Transportation Co. on March 3, 1914.

The Yellow Cab Company of Chicago (not to be confused the Yellow Taxicab Co.) was founded by John Hertz in 1914. Their specially designed taxicabs were powered by a 4-cylinder Continental engine equipped with a purpose-built taxicab body supplied by the Racine Body Co., of Racine, Wisconsin.[2] According to Yellow Cab Co. tradition, the color (and name) yellow was selected by John Hertz as the result of a survey by the University of Chicago which indicated it was the easiest color to spot.[citation needed]

The Yellow Cab Manufacturing Company was formed in 1920
