Bodie's Gold: Tall Tales and True History from a California Mining Town

Bodie's Gold: Tall Tales and True History from a California Mining Town

The Bodie Mining District was established in 1860 after the discovery of gold deposits in the area. Bodie's largest boom ended just over twenty years later, but the town survived into the twentieth century supported by a few small but steady mines. Mining ended with World War II. What remained of the town became a state park in 1964.
In Bodie's Gold, author Marguerite Sprague uncovers the original sources of information whenever possible, from the first mining claims to interviews with former Bodieites. Enhanced with numerous historic photographs and extracts from newspapers of that period, as well as by the reminiscences of former residents, the book offers a fascinating account of life in a Gold Rush boomtown. The book is now available in a new, easier-to-handle paperback edition that will make it more convenient for readers who want to carry if with them in a car or backpack.

Roaring Camp: The Social World of the California Gold Rush

Winner of the 2001 Bancroft Prize.
Historical insight is the alchemy that transforms the familiar story of the Gold Rush into something sparkling and new. The world of the Gold Rush that comes down to us through fiction and film—of unshaven men named Stumpy and Kentuck raising hell and panning for gold—is one of half-truths. In this brilliant work of social history, Susan Johnson enters the well-worked diggings of Gold Rush history and strikes a rich lode. She finds a dynamic social world in which the conventions of identity—ethnic, national, and sexual—were reshaped in surprising ways. She gives us the all-male households of the diggings, the mines where the men worked, and the fandango houses where they played. With a keen eye for character and story, Johnson restores the particular social world that issued in the Gold Rush myths we still cherish. Maps, illustrations.

Philippi, near Mount Pangaeus, was to the Macedonian kings what Laurium had long been to the Athenians – a seemingly inexhaustible source of wealth; the only difference being the mines at Laurium produced silver, and those near Philippi yielded both silver and gold. The Pangaean mines had been exploited in earlier times by Thracians, Athenians and Thasians, only to be claimed by the Macedonian king Philip II (359-336 B.C.) early in his reign. Before Philip’s intervention the city was known as Crenides or Datum, but in 356 Philip renamed it Philippi. He greatly enriched and improved the city, which he repopulated and made a ‘free’ Greek city within his kingdom. At the time Philip II claimed the Pangaean region, the Thasians were working the mines and striking coins with the Heracles/tripod design and the inscription ‘of the Thasians on the mainland’. The Macedonian issues that followed bore the same design, but were inscribed with the new name of the city. The Macedonians produced a full range of denominations – gold staters, silver tetradrachms, drachms and hemidrachms, and bronzes of at least two sizes – in what seems to have been two phases, c. 356-330 B.C., and c. 330-323 B.C. The first phase probably comprised six issues, with this tetradrachm belonging to the inaugural striking. With some confidence we may thus place it in 356, when the city was renamed. Though all gold coins of Philipi adhered to the Attic standard, the earliest silver, such as this tetradrachm, was struck at what Morkholm calls "a rather light variant of Philip’s silver standard". Bellinger believes this was done to "compete for the influence in the Paeonian region," where the standard was lower. But a lighter weight was perhaps needed to discourage their export, and thus keep them around as local currency. In either case, the silver of the second phase of Philippi’s Macedonian coinage (seemingly limited to tetradrachms) was struck to the full weight of regal silver.

The One That Got Away

The One That Got Away

Jan 10th, 2011 Juggling Prospects / Negativism

"It is much easier to see what we haven't done than it is to see what we have done" (on workaholics)
If we take stock of what we were able to do, we find it is time for a celebration of our accomplishments. The above boxes were made for sale when I was "not working", or trying to market my own art work during a recession. While "not working", I moved my furniture in, I totally cleaned a filthy home and looked after the two kids of my new mate, who didn't clean either, I planted a veggie garden, made a large compost bin, cleared and landscaped the front yard, painted and cleaned the basement, had a clearing yardsale, bought the kids quilts with the results, found a way to feed vegetables to a little boy who would not eat veggies, and bought waterproof garbage bins for the storage problem in the basement. All the while, I was making boxes and paintings for sale, as well. I lasted at this for three weeks- I got yelled at for leaving a 25 watt lightbulb on to come up the basement stairs and greet my mate. I needed thelight ion the stairs so I could come up the dark basement. I had paid for the paint, stem cleaning of rugs, soaps, rent, quilts, bins, etc and was actively working away when told what a waste I was.The light had been on one minute longer than I had been in the basement.
The same person came later where I lived in another home, and took pictures with me of this wood box for practise. Of course, the photos "didn't work out", when they were my half of the film.

An explanation:
Sour grapes department. One day, my old friend showed up with a brand new lens. He asked me if I would like to try a macro lens on my Konika. Being a chump, I said, hey, great- let's do it.
We both took half the shots each on a roll of Kodak Gold 400.

When I went to Paul Nelsons', (a photo shop) the roll did not turn out. In fact, it was non-existent, they claimed. This happened to 18 rolls (of mine) of Paul Nelsons' film stock, and yet the store never replaced the film.

I kept my old painted box lid, although the box broke from too much wear. It is fragile, and I thought, here is something that I wanted to record- craft painting from my old hippie days- the little things that you never keep a record of, usually!!

painted in: 1989
